COACHING MOMENT
“We’re on offense. All the time.” – one of NIKE’s ten company principals
I saw the movie AIR this past weekend and absolutely loved it. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Viola Davis. Great story, great message.
As someone who can find motivation in almost anything, this movie had a ton of “if you want big rewards, sometimes you need to take big risks, go with your gut, and shoot-your-shot” type inspiration.
So much of the High-Performance Coaching I do is about helping people get back to playing offense in their life. So seeing this line in the movie made me smile and tap my girlfriend’s leg when they shared that one of Nike’s Ten Principals was about playing offense “ALL THE TIME.”
The fact is, nobody ever did anything great living their life playing defense. Offense is where the big moves are made and that’s where you need to be consistently operating in order to stand out in this world.
RAISE YOUR PERFORMANCE
Health:
Your gym environment makes a difference. If you’re uninspired to work out, you first need to start with some internal reflection on goals, discipline, and your approach to fitness. It also may be time to evaluate your gym, studio, or fitness class environment.
I recently changed gyms for the simple reason that the environment just wasn’t inspiring me anymore. I had started to level up in many areas of my life, and my gym was next on that list.
I now pay more than 4x as much for my gym membership and I’m more motivated and happier about my fitness than I’ve been in a while. The other members and the amenities like the sauna, classes, and a smoothie bar/cafe right inside the gym all make a difference to me. Not only for convenience and saving me time, but also because the people in this gym just motivate me more. Everyone in there (especially at 6am) is fit, working hard, and takes fitness seriously. That change alone has returned the gym to being a place I can’t wait to go.
Just like the other areas of your life, be sure your gym environment is one that not only inspires you but also encourages you to GROW.

Relationships
How do you bring up important conversations with your significant other or spouse around money/spending/finances?
While there are multiple successful ways to do it, I’ve found that many of my clients have found success when specific money dates or meetings are set.
This way, both sides can be prepared with areas they want to discuss, have any bank or tax documents ready, and both be on the same page for a healthy and productive discussion.
Discrepancies and disagreements about money are one of the top three reasons couples break up. Get ahead early and often on this one and schedule your first money date with your significant other.

Career / Fulfillment:
Question: If retirement was never an option, and you had to work until your last day on Earth, would you keep your current job/career or change professions?
If you would keep your current job:
This may mean you found something that you genuinely enjoy doing and find fulfillment and purpose from it.
Or it could mean that you’ve been at it so long and you are more comfortable with familiarity than you are with doing something that brings you immense joy.
Or, perhaps you like the money and the lifestyle this career provides you with, and you plan on being a baller until your final breath.
Either way, finding a career and passion that you aren’t in a rush to escape from is one of the leading causes of a happy and fulfilling life.
If you have that, you should be proud of yourself for being in the unfortunately small percentage of people who actually love their job.
If you would change your profession:
Dive deeper into this answer as it may be more telling than you think. If the idea of a career change is only on the table when the idea of retirement is removed, ask yourself why that is?
Why not right now? Why not do something you enjoy, even if it means you have to do it a bit longer?
I really challenge you to sit with this question and ask yourself why you so willingly give up so many days of your prime years doing something that you would change in a minute if retirement was no longer an option.
How much would your day-to-day life improve if you woke up every Monday more excited for the work you were about to do, and the week ahead? So many hours of our life and of our week are spent working.
When you break it down, it really is difficult to argue why so many of us spend those hours miserable, doing something we aren’t excited about or aligned with.
Here’s the best part…….you can still make a change now, AND still hopefully retire at some point. Don’t waste your prime years doing something that doesn’t bring you joy and purpose. Ask someone in their 90’s. It’s not worth it.
Play offense.
